Choose the operating problem, not only the business name

Start with the activity you will actually sell. A founder selling a service, a business holding customer inventory and an operator buying long-lived equipment face different cash and delivery risks. The library separates those choices so that a popular sector is not mistaken for a viable operating model.

Compare cash exposure on the same basis

For each shortlisted business, write down the billable unit, the realistically deliverable monthly volume and the contribution remaining after direct costs. Then build a calendar of customer collections, payroll, supplier payments, tax cash and equipment expenditure. A business with positive annual profit can still need additional opening liquidity. Compare models after using the same owner-pay expectation and liquidity reserve, rather than choosing the example with the largest revenue figure.

The supplied models use illustrative assumptions. Replace those assumptions with dated customer evidence and supplier quotations before borrowing or signing a lease. A refundable customer deposit is a liability until the contractual obligation is discharged; it should not be counted as margin simply because the money is in the bank.

A practical first-week investigation

Interview customers who can actually buy within your intended catchment or sales cycle. Ask what they currently purchase, who authorises the expenditure, what outcome they reject and when they pay. Obtain a written scope and price for a pilot before buying equipment for an untested offer. Keep sensitive customer information out of the public working templates.

Next, identify the physical location, actual services, product categories, employees and funds flow. Use the individual playbook to identify the relevant authority and evidence. An application acknowledgement is not a granted permission. Where a rule depends on a State, municipality, product or transaction, record that dependency instead of assuming a nationwide licence or fee.

How to use the complete set

Read the business guide for sector-specific choices, the operating handbook for shared procedures and the editable workbook for cash planning. The question finder is a navigation aid to the full answers. Internal working records are deliberately separate from prescribed government forms. The PDF chapters retain the business guidance and link back to the supporting operating handbook; digital tools remain available alongside the books.
