EV incentives — verify before purchase: The central FAME-II scheme closed for vehicles sold/registered after 31 Mar 2024. Its successor, PM E-DRIVE (Sep 2024–Mar 2026), primarily covers e-2-wheelers, e-3-wheelers, e-buses, e-trucks and ambulances — not private electric passenger cars. Some states still run their own incentives (e.g. road-tax/registration waivers), but these vary and change frequently. Default this field to ₹0 unless you have confirmed a scheme you actually qualify for.

How to Use the EV vs Petrol Calculator

Enter the on-road price of the EV and its petrol/CNG equivalent, your expected annual driving distance, electricity tariff (or public charging cost) and fuel price. Add your expected ownership period and resale value assumptions. The calculator computes the running cost per km for each option, projects total cost of ownership over your holding period — including the EV price premium and fuel/energy savings — and shows the break-even distance at which the EV becomes cheaper overall.

TCO Formula

EV Total Cost = On-Road Price + (Annual km × Energy Cost/km × Years) − Resale Value
Petrol Total Cost = On-Road Price + (Annual km × Fuel Cost/km × Years) − Resale Value
Break-even Distance = EV Price Premium ÷ (Petrol Cost/km − EV Cost/km)

EVs typically break even within 2-4 years of average usage (12,000-15,000 km/year) due to the large running-cost gap shown below. The verdict is most sensitive to annual distance driven and home charging access. See our EV vs Petrol TCO guide for detailed scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EV cheaper than petrol in India in 2025?
Running cost: EV ~₹1–1.5/km (home charging) vs petrol ~₹6–8/km. Fuel savings are significant — approximately ₹5–6 lakh over 5 years at 15K km/year. However, EVs cost ₹3–6L more upfront, so break-even is 3–5 years depending on mileage. High mileage drivers (>15K km/year) benefit most from EVs.
What is the charging cost for EVs in India?
Home charging: ₹7–9/unit × ~15 kWh per 100 km = ₹1.05–1.35/km (cheapest option). Public AC charging: ₹8–12/unit = ₹1.20–1.80/km. Public DC fast charger: ₹14–18/unit = ₹2.10–2.70/km. For maximum savings, do 80–90% of charging at home.
What is Section 80EEB — EV tax benefit?
Section 80EEB allows a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh on EV loan interest under the Old Tax Regime (loans sanctioned April 2019 – March 2023). Post March 2023, this section is no longer active for new loans. Additionally, EVs attract only 5% GST vs 28%+ cess for petrol cars, making them more affordable. Use our Income Tax Calculator to compare old vs new regime after factoring in EV deductions.
How long do EV batteries last in India?
Most major EVs in India carry an 8-year/1,60,000 km battery warranty. Real-world degradation: ~10–20% capacity loss by year 8 in Indian conditions. Battery replacement cost: ₹3–8 lakh depending on vehicle. This calculator models battery degradation impact as a scenario input.
