Compare service-led and premises-led businesses
This collection focuses on businesses whose success depends on service delivery, local capacity, project execution or handling customer property. The useful comparison is not simply which business has more customers. It is whether one additional sale can be served safely and profitably without creating an unmanageable staffing, refund or cash obligation.
| Business group | Main operating constraint | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Salon and fitness | Qualified service capacity, appointment utilisation and continuing membership obligations | Service menu, staff competence, booking history, cancellation terms and equipment maintenance records |
| Preschool and coaching | Safe occupancy, safeguarding, teaching coverage and realistic parent/student expectations | Applicable local recognition conditions, staff verification, collection permissions, course terms and refund process |
| Travel and transport | Supplier commitments, trip performance, payment timing and incident responsibility | Booking or carriage contracts, vehicle/service scope, cancellation exposures and settlement reconciliations |
| Property and creative agencies | Mandate clarity, client approvals, commission collection and ownership of work | Signed engagement, authority to act, deliverable acceptance, client-money records and rights permissions |
| Solar installation and warehousing | Site readiness, technical performance, inventory custody and committed capacity | Site feasibility, accepted specifications, commissioning or stock handover, insurance scope and service-level measures |
Appointment revenue and prepaid money are different
A salon appointment is usually a short service event, while an annual fitness membership or school term creates a continuing obligation. Compare revenue earned with the service actually delivered. Reserve capacity for future delivery and money for reasonable contractual refunds. Discounted annual collections can improve immediate cash while reducing realised monthly price; the effect should be visible in the model rather than hidden inside a large sales number.
Understand who bears loss when something changes
A travel booking may carry a non-refundable supplier commitment even when the customer expects a refund. A logistics operator can lose contribution through an empty return journey or failed delivery. A warehouse may have custody of stock it does not own. Describe these situations in contracts and operating records before they happen. Measure recoveries and claims separately from ordinary sales so that management can see the actual cause of loss.
Choose a pilot that tests the bottleneck
For a creative agency, test whether a client will approve a tightly defined deliverable and pay within the agreed cycle. For a tuition centre, test scheduling, attendance and parent communication before committing to another floor. For a solar installer, use a site survey and an accepted bill of materials rather than an unsupported savings promise. For storage, test inbound condition recording, location accuracy and a customer stock reconciliation before accepting a high-value consignment.
Match permissions to the exact service
Ordinary beauty services should not quietly expand into regulated medical procedures. Private coaching should not be described as a recognised qualification without the relevant authority. A warehouse's service contract is not a negotiable warehouse receipt registration. The linked guides explain those boundaries and give an evidence path; the operating handbook supplies common application and finance procedures.
Use this batch when your shortlist is driven by customer service, premises or recurring contracts. Use the full library when you also need product manufacturing, pharmacy, care services, AI automation or EV servicing. The financial illustrations are comparison tools, not a ranking of investment returns.
