Methodology, assumptions and sources

Scope: Compares the projected return, post-tax return and historical drawdown of two or more financial instruments (equity, debt, gold, FD, etc.) side by side, using the return and holding-period assumptions entered.

Calculation logic

  1. Compute nominal future value for each instrument using its entered/assumed return rate and the common holding period, using standard compounding.
  2. Compute post-tax return by applying the capital-gains tax treatment applicable to each instrument's category and the holding period entered (e.g., equity LTCG vs debt-fund taxation vs FD interest taxed at slab rate).
  3. Compute inflation-adjusted (real) return using the Fisher relation for each instrument, given the inflation assumption entered.
  4. Where historical drawdown data is shown, it reflects the maximum peak-to-trough decline for that instrument class over the reference period used, drawn from the illustrative dataset built into the tool.

Inputs and assumptions

  • Return rates entered/assumed for each instrument are illustrative planning assumptions, not guaranteed or predicted future returns.
  • Tax treatment applied follows the current capital-gains rules for each instrument category as of the calculation date.

Exclusions and edge cases

  • Market-linked instrument returns are inherently uncertain — this tool is for comparison of assumptions, not a return guarantee or investment recommendation.
  • Does not account for instrument-specific costs (expense ratio, exit load, brokerage) unless the user builds them into the entered return rate.

Sources

No specific external regulatory source applies beyond general market-linked instrument mechanics.
