Advance Tax and Interest: Dates, ₹10,000 Threshold and Calculation
Advance tax is a pay-as-you-earn mechanism for taxpayers whose final liability is not fully covered by TDS. The surprise usually appears because salary TDS excludes capital gains, freelance profit, rent, interest or a job change.
For broader context, see the Income Tax and Salary Hub.
Current position in plain English
Decision table
| Due date | Regular cumulative target | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| 15 June | 15% | Known rent, business, interest and realised gains? |
| 15 September | 45% | Has salary TDS or income estimate changed? |
| 15 December | 75% | Are bonuses, dividends or asset sales now visible? |
| 15 March | 100% | Is the full-year estimate reconciled? |
| 31 March | Tax paid can still be advance tax for the year | Interest may already arise for instalment shortfalls |

How to apply the rule
Use the portal statement as a starting point, not a substitute for books and supporting documents. Tax reporting follows the legal character of an amount: a bank credit may be income, a transfer, a loan, a reimbursement or a sale consideration. Label the amount before deciding its tax treatment.
Keep a year-specific working paper. The transition on 1 April 2026 means the filing date alone does not identify the governing statute. Record the income period, the applicable Act, the return or proceeding, the tax credit and the portal service used.
A good compliance file lets another professional reproduce the result. Include the taxpayer’s figure, the department or third-party figure, the difference, the explanation and the evidence reference.
For advance tax due dates India, first identify the legal or contractual relationship, then separate the amount, event and deadline. Use one chronology across the portal, institution and supporting records. This prevents a correct fact from being submitted under the wrong year, account, policy clause or complaint route.
Practical example
Neha’s employer deducts tax on salary, but she realises ₹4 lakh of capital gains in August and earns ₹1.2 lakh bank interest. She should recompute annual tax before 15 September and later instalments. Waiting until return filing can create interest even if the full tax is ultimately paid.
Action checklist
- Prepare a rolling annual-income estimate.
- Reduce only reliable TDS/TCS and tax credits.
- Update the estimate after asset sales, bonuses, job changes or large invoices.
- Pay using the correct Act and tax year on the portal.
- Save challans and verify they appear against the correct PAN/year.
- Recalculate before each instalment instead of repeating the first estimate.
Evidence and document checklist
- Salary and TDS forecast
- Business or professional management accounts
- Bank interest and dividend statements
- Capital-gain working
- Rental-income schedule
- Prior advance-tax challans
- Tax regime and deduction assumptions
Common mistakes
- Using last year’s tax without updating income
- Reducing expected TDS that has not been deducted
- Selecting AY 2026–27 for Tax Year 2026–27 under the new Act
- Ignoring cess, surcharge or special-rate income
- Assuming self-assessment tax removes earlier interest
- Missing instalments after a late-year capital gain without checking relief rules
Red flags
- Large one-time gain or bonus
- Multiple employers or inadequate payroll TDS
- Foreign income without Indian withholding
- Business profit fluctuating sharply
- Wrong challan year or Act
- Tax paid but not reflected in portal records
Escalation route
Use the official tax-payment service and correct challan mapping. For a wrong challan, seek the available correction route promptly. Obtain advice where special-rate income, presumptive tax or non-resident status applies.
When escalating, include the original complaint, acknowledgement, concise chronology, disputed amount, rule or clause relied upon and the exact relief requested. Do not send passwords, PINs, OTPs or unrelated identity documents.
