Read the unit before comparing numbers
- A member account is not automatically a distinct person, household or new job. Account consolidation, exits and re-joining can affect an administrative series.
- Monthly additions, monthly net additions and a stock of active accounts are different measures. A payroll-release series must be interpreted using its own stated definitions.
- An amount processed, a number of claims and a processing limit have different units. For example, the 2025 government review’s auto-settlement limit up to ₹5 lakh is a process limit; it is not a count of beneficiaries or a guarantee that every claim qualifies.
- State, establishment, sector and reporting-period filters must match before a comparison is meaningful. Keep revisions and provisional/final status with the extract.
Worked comparison
Hypothetical active-account stock: opening 1000, additions 120 and exits 80 gives closing 1040. Gross additions are 120, while the increase in this defined stock is 40. Relative to the opening stock, those are 12% and 4% respectively. Neither percentage may be relabelled as a national employment-growth rate. A real government series can use different definitions, including re-joining and later revisions, so apply its own methodology.
A useful evidence file
- Record the source URL, publisher, dataset title and download date.
- Save the reporting period, unit, geography, filters and whether the figure is provisional or revised.
- Keep the original table/export and its notes beside the calculation, rather than only a cropped chart.
- Compare the same measure and period. Explain any break in coverage or method before calculating growth.
- Use the relevant enacted law, scheme and individual records for a legal or benefit decision. An aggregate dashboard row is not an assessment, acknowledgement or benefit order.
