Credit-information complaints and CIC Internal Ombudsman review
A Credit Information Company and a Core Investment Company share an abbreviation but have different legal roles and complaint coverage.

How this provision works
- All Credit Information Companies fall under their own 2026 IO direction. Eligible partially resolved or wholly rejected complaints must auto-escalate within 25 days, with the final decision communicated within 30 days. The bank’s 20-day escalation rule is different.
- For new external complaints from 1 July 2026, Credit Information Companies are explicitly included in the RBI Scheme. Core Investment Companies are instead among its excluded NBFC categories. Do not confuse the two uses of CIC.
- A dispute with the specific remedy under section 18 of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act is an exclusion in the IO direction and external Scheme. This does not turn every customer request to correct a credit-report error into an automatically excluded inter-party statutory dispute.
- Keep the disputed report entry, lender/CIC reference, complaint receipt, correction evidence and final response aligned. The Scheme’s 90-day filing and Award/compensation rules apply only when its coverage and maintainability conditions are met.
Practical illustration
A borrower’s request to correct an inaccurately reported loan closure needs its actual service facts assessed. A dispute of the type assigned to the CICRA section 18 remedy requires the distinct statutory route; the abbreviation “CIC dispute” alone does not settle that classification.
The example is illustrative; it is not a reported company or court case.
Questions answered
Is the CIC IO auto-escalation deadline 20 days?
No. Current CIC clause 14(1) specifies 25 days, with the final response within 30 days.
Are Credit Information Companies excluded because Core Investment Companies are excluded?
No. They are different entities. Credit Information Companies are expressly included in Scheme clause 1(3)(d).

Scope and source editions
The public RBI Ombudsman Scheme 2026 applies from 1 July 2026, with the 2021 saving in clause 20. The internal-review explanation uses the Commercial Banks IO Directions of 14 January 2026 and compares specific NBFC/CIC differences where stated. Bank IO applicability generally requires 10 or more banking outlets at 31 March 2025, with a six-month rule for later qualification. NBFC internal-IO thresholds differ from external Scheme coverage. CIC source 13276 means Credit Information Companies; source 13274 means NBFCs and 13273 means Payments Banks.
