Tripura shops law: 2021 registration changes
Author: CA Nikhil Gupta · Reviewer: CA Nikhil Gupta · 11 October 2026
Tripura Act 5 of 2021 changed the Tripura Shops and Establishments Act, 1970. The published Gazette—not a proposal—governs the treatment of shop registration and trade licences.
Gazette and commencement
The Fifth Amendment Act received the Governor’s assent on 11 May 2021 and was published in the Tripura Gazette on 24 May 2021. Section 1 makes it effective upon Gazette publication.
Actual amendments
The amendment deleted the definition of “registering authority” from Section 2; substituted “Labour Officer” in another Section 2 reference; deleted Section 16; amended Section 17(1); and replaced “certificate of registration” in Section 20(a) with trade licence issued by the competent authority under any law in force.
What still applies
Removing the earlier shop-registration provision does not abolish requirements concerning working hours, weekly rest, holidays, wages or records. Check applicability to the specific shop category and amendments affecting women’s night work before setting staffing policies.
Example
An Agartala retailer with a valid municipal trade licence should not automatically apply an obsolete Section 16 registration checklist. The retailer must still maintain applicable employee records and ensure its licence is current under the issuing authority’s own law.
