Motor Insurance Claim: Accident Evidence and Surveyor Checklist
Reviewed by CA Nikhil Gupta · Last reviewed 12 June 2026
An accident claim checklist covering safety, police records, photos, insurer intimation, survey, repairs, salvage and settlement.
For broader context, see the Investing, Loans and Personal Finance Hub.
The first priority after an accident is safety and legal compliance. The insurance file begins once immediate danger is controlled.
Own-damage claims depend on the policy, insured vehicle, driver, event, exclusions, deductibles and claim evidence.
Third-party injury or property claims follow a different legal route from the vehicle’s own-damage claim.
Material repairs should not begin before insurer/survey process where required, except reasonable emergency protection.
Driving licence, permit, fitness and usage can be relevant depending on vehicle and event.
What the policyholder should understand

| Scene | Photos/video, location, vehicles, damage and witnesses. |

Practical example
A car is damaged in a collision. The owner moves it to a workshop and authorises full dismantling before claim intimation. The insurer disputes the damage pattern and replaced parts. A better process would preserve scene photos, notify the insurer, obtain the survey reference and authorise work after the required inspection, while taking emergency steps only to prevent further loss.
How to apply the framework
At the scene, do not admit liability casually or sign unknown documents. Exchange required information and follow police requirements. Take wide and close photographs without obstructing safety. Note weather, road and impact points. If towing is needed, use an authorised service where possible and preserve the invoice.
At the garage, compare estimate, survey approval and final bill. Ask which parts are repaired, replaced or treated as salvage and how depreciation and deductibles apply. If the insurer reduces the claim, request an item-wise basis. For theft, flooding, total loss or third-party injury, additional immediate steps and documents apply.
Action checklist
- Prioritise safety and police compliance.
