Form 26AS vs AIS vs TIS: What Each Tax Statement Actually Shows

Form 26AS, AIS and TIS Explained

Form 26AS, AIS and TIS overlap, but they do not serve the same purpose. A clean tax return uses all three alongside primary evidence instead of treating any one portal statement as the complete truth.

Finin2min takeaway: Act from primary records, use the official channel and keep a dated evidence trail. A portal message, screenshot, dashboard or verbal assurance is not a substitute for the governing rule and underlying documents.

Current position in plain English

Form 26AS is the core tax-credit recordIt is central for TDS, TCS, specified tax payments and other prescribed information. A deduction certificate should be reconciled to this official credit record.
AIS is the detailed information statementIt provides a broader transaction-level view and allows feedback. Gross transaction values may differ from taxable income.
TIS is the processed summaryIt presents category-wise processed values and can support pre-fill or analysis. It is not a substitute for the detailed AIS or source documents.
Primary records still control the computationSalary slips, bank certificates, invoices, books, broker ledgers and contracts determine the nature and amount of income.
Year and law matter after 1 April 2026The portal supports the old and new Acts for their respective periods. Use the correct statement, form and tax period.

How to apply the rule

Use the portal statement as a starting point, not a substitute for books and supporting documents. Tax reporting follows the legal character of an amount: a bank credit may be income, a transfer, a loan, a reimbursement or a sale consideration. Label the amount before deciding its tax treatment.

Keep a year-specific working paper. The transition on 1 April 2026 means the filing date alone does not identify the governing statute. Record the income period, the applicable Act, the return or proceeding, the tax credit and the portal service used.

A good compliance file lets another professional reproduce the result. Include the taxpayer’s figure, the department or third-party figure, the difference, the explanation and the evidence reference.

For Form 26AS vs AIS vs TIS, first identify the legal or contractual relationship, then separate the amount, event and deadline. Use one chronology across the portal, institution and supporting records. This prevents a correct fact from being submitted under the wrong year, account, policy clause or complaint route.

Practical example

A freelancer has ₹8 lakh of receipts in a payment account, ₹80,000 of TDS in Form 26AS and ₹9 lakh in AIS because one payer reported gross billing including a reversed invoice. The return should reconcile books, actual receipts and TDS—not copy the largest portal number.

Common mistakes

Red flags

  • Tax credit in certificate but absent from Form 26AS
  • High-value information with no known source
  • Joint-account or property data reported entirely against one PAN
  • Foreign income or asset reporting questions
  • Processed values that remain wrong after source correction

Escalation route

Correct TDS/TCS through the deductor or collector. Submit AIS feedback for information errors. Use the appropriate return, rectification, grievance or notice-response route for the actual tax consequence.

When escalating, include the original complaint, acknowledgement, concise chronology, disputed amount, rule or clause relied upon and the exact relief requested. Do not send passwords, PINs, OTPs or unrelated identity documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which statement should I trust most?
Trust no statement in isolation. Reconcile all three with source documents and law.
Does AIS replace Form 26AS?
No. AIS is broader, while Form 26AS remains central to tax-credit reconciliation.
Why can TIS show a different number?
It may use processed or derived values after feedback and information rules.
What if income is not in any statement?
Report it if taxable. Portal visibility does not determine taxability.
Will these statements continue under the new Act?
Information reporting continues, though form numbering and portal presentation can change for new tax years.
