How the calculation works

  1. Actual margin = (revenue − cost) ÷ cost.
  2. Benchmark = mean of the comparable OP/OC margins plus the accepted comparability adjustment.
  3. Arm’s length price = cost × (1 + benchmark); the gap to actual revenue is the possible shortfall.

Background and professional notes

A transfer-pricing number is an outcome of an economic analysis

Arm’s-length price cannot be proved simply by applying a fixed percentage. The appropriate method depends on the functions performed, assets used, risks assumed, available third-party data, economic circumstances and whether the tested transaction can be reliably segmented. This workbench uses one deliberately narrow transactional net margin scenario with operating profit divided by operating costs.

Understanding the comparable margins

Upload or type verified comparable operating profit margins separated by commas. The tool computes a simple average and lets the reviewer enter a separately documented comparability adjustment in percentage points. It uses that assumed adjusted benchmark to calculate indicative required revenue for the cost base. Differences are possible review signals—not automatic taxable adjustments.

Form 3CEB and new Form 48

For historical Income-tax Act 1961 periods, Form 3CEB is the accountant’s transfer pricing report. In the 2026 tax-year framework, the notified replacement is Form 48 under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Distinguish reporting obligations from computations and verify the nature and monetary threshold of international and specified domestic transactions.

What the workbench does not do

It does not perform a database search, eliminate related-party comparables, compute an interquartile range, apply a statutory tolerance notification, establish a most appropriate method or generate a digitally signed report. Those tasks require a contemporaneous TP file and professional analysis. The output remains a traceable preliminary sensitivity calculation.

Operating-margin example

A tested service company incurs ₹1 crore in eligible operating costs and records ₹1.08 crore in operating revenue, producing 8% OP/OC. Three independently selected comparables produce 8%, 10% and 12%, giving a 10% simple average. Without additional adjustments, illustrative revenue at a 10% mark-up is ₹1.10 crore; the ₹2-lakh difference requires a transfer-pricing review, not automatic accounting recognition or tax adjustment.

Evidence checklist for practitioners

Preserve a functional, assets and risk analysis; tested-party financial segment; comparable search strategy; rejection reasons; capital adjustment working; exchange-rate assumptions; documentary authority for the tax year and any report submitted to the Department.

Frequently asked questions

Is the comparable average a final ALP?

No. Method selection, comparability and statutory range rules require independent analysis.

Does Form 48 apply to 2025-26?

No. The transition to Form 48 is for the 2026 tax-year reporting framework.

What is OP/OC?

Operating profit divided by operating costs, expressed as a percentage.

Can I use 3% safe harbour automatically?

No. The applicable tolerance is notification- and transaction-specific.
