How the calculation works

  1. Target future value = today’s goal × (1 + inflation)^years.
  2. The return is converted to an effective rate per period and the level contribution is solved from the annuity formula, after the growth of any opening balance.
  3. Contributions can be at the end or the beginning of each period.

Background and professional notes

2-minute explanation: what the result means

Estimate level monthly, quarterly or annual funding contributions, beginning/end payment timing, inflation-adjusted targets and a complete schedule.

Worked example for Indian finance teams

To fund a ₹10 lakh goal in five years with no starting capital and a 6% assumed annual return, the model solves a level deposit per month using the equivalent effective monthly growth rate.

Methodology and audit trail

Grow the target by user-selected inflation; compound the opening corpus at effective periodic rates; divide the remaining future-value gap by the future-value annuity factor. Contributions at the start of each interval earn one additional period of return.

Assumptions and limits of the calculation

Market returns are variable and often taxable. The model has no tax, management fees, inflation surprises or partial withdrawal assumptions; the result is an investment funding estimate, not a guaranteed corpus.

Planning for a target that changes over time

A sinking fund differs from a regular investment projection because it starts with a defined future liability or purchase. Enter the goal at current prices and the expected inflation assumption; the tool shows the future nominal amount. Choose beginning-period contributions if automatic deposits will happen on the first day of each period. Compare the required periodic contribution with cash-flow affordability and recalculate after return or inflation assumptions change. A conservative planner may use a lower return for the last years as asset allocation shifts toward capital preservation.

Documents and evidence to preserve

Goal invoice or cost estimate, inflation source, existing account balances, periodic standing instruction, investment risk suitability review, tax-cost assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

They compound for one extra investment period. The required periodic contribution is shown as zero, with any projected surplus displayed. No. Returns are assumed and actual investment results may vary materially.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the nominal or real return?

The target is inflated to the future, so use the nominal return you expect from the investment mix.

What if I already have savings for the goal?

Enter them as the opening balance; they grow at the same return and reduce the contribution.

Are the returns guaranteed?

No. The return is an assumption. Market-linked funds vary, so review the plan each year.
