Balance by quarter

Status of the scheme

The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate, 2023 was announced in Budget 2023-24 for women and girls and could be opened until 31 March 2025. It was not extended in Budget 2025 and no new accounts can be opened now. Accounts opened before that date keep their 7.5% rate and mature two years from the date of deposit. If you are looking for a similar safe, short-term option, compare NSC, bank FDs and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (for age 60+).

How the maturity value is calculated

Interest is compounded quarterly at 7.5% / 4 = 1.875% per quarter for 8 quarters: maturity = deposit × 1.018758. A ₹2,00,000 deposit matures at ₹2,32,044, matching the scheme’s published figure.

Partial withdrawal and premature closure

Tax on MSSC

MSSC has no deduction under section 80C. The interest (₹32,044 on a ₹2 lakh deposit) is taxable as income from other sources at your slab rate. At the 30% slab (31.2% with cess) the tax is about ₹9,998.

Methodology, assumptions and sources

Scope: Maturity, partial withdrawal and premature-closure values of an existing MSSC account.

Calculation logic

  1. Balance after k quarters = deposit × (1 + rate/4)k.
  2. Partial withdrawal = 40% of the balance after 4 quarters; the rest compounds for 4 more quarters.
  3. Premature closure after at least 6 months uses (rate − 2%) for completed quarters.
  4. Tax = interest × slab × 1.04.
