Document authentication. 233. (1) A notice or other document communicated electronically by an income-tax authority is deemed authenticated— (a) for an e-mail, if the name and office of the authority is printed either in the e-mail body (where the notice/document is in the body itself) or on the attachment (where it is in the attachment), and the e-mail is issued from that authority's designated e-mail address; (b) for an electronic record, if the name and office of the authority is displayed as part of the record (where the notice/document is text or remark in the record itself) or printed on the attachment (where it is in the attachment), and the record is displayed on the designated website. (2) The Principal Director General or Director General of Income-tax (Systems) shall specify the designated e-mail address, the designated website, and the procedure, formats and standards for ensuring authenticity. (3) For the purposes of this rule, "electronic mail" and "electronic mail message" have the meanings assigned in the Explanation to section 66A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and "electronic record" has the meaning assigned in section 2(1)(t) of that Act.
