CPC prescribed forms: choose the right appendix

The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 includes the First Schedule of Orders and Rules and Appendices containing prescribed form models. Appendix A addresses pleadings, Appendix B process, Appendix C discovery/inspection/admission, Appendix F decrees, Appendix G execution and Appendix H supplemental proceedings. Court-specific practice and amendments may require adaptation.

Who should use this guidance, and when?

Start from the procedural act being taken: filing plaint, issuing process, seeking inspection, drafting decree or commencing execution. Identify the enabling Order and Rule as well as the Appendix model.

Practical compliance workflow

Compare court jurisdiction, cause title, required verification, service mode and applicable High Court amendments. Use prescribed forms as starting points, not as substitutes for the governing rule.

Worked Indian example

For inspection of documents under Order XI, counsel should select the applicable Appendix C model, identify the exact documents and provide the correct case title, while checking whether the relevant court has amended procedure.

Common mistake and boundary condition

The numbers of forms on an index page do not prove that every model is current in every High Court. Check repealed schedules and local civil rules before filing.
