23 October 2026 | US closing session 22 October; India observations Friday morning
The Nasdaq fell about 2.6% overnight, with a sharp decline in large US AI-linked technology names. Meta's shares fell nearly 8% after AI spending contributed to its first cash outflow in more than a decade. At the same time, India's IT sector initially climbed about 1% on Friday. The divergence is economically plausible because the two groups have very different capital requirements.
Capital spending is the dividing line
US hyperscalers finance enormous data-centre capacity, servers, chips, energy and networking infrastructure before a full revenue payback is visible. When markets demand proof of AI profitability, share prices for asset-heavy builders can fall. Indian IT service vendors generally sell consulting, cloud implementation, integration, cybersecurity and maintenance services. They can sometimes benefit from a client's investment programme without having to own equivalent infrastructure.
This is not a guarantee of insulation. Indian IT firms remain exposed to client budget cuts, contract pricing, wage inflation and delays in discretionary projects. A full reversal in enterprise AI spending could eventually reduce spending on both infrastructure and services.
What the Indian market actually did
The morning IT strength did not produce a broad market rally. By 10:13 AM, 15 of 16 major sectors were in the red, and the benchmark indices had already lost their opening gains. That is why 'IT up while the Nasdaq falls' and 'Nifty down overall' are consistent descriptions rather than contradictory ones.
What matters next
Quarterly US hyperscaler capital-spending guidance, Indian IT deal pipelines, conversion of large contracts into billable revenue, margins after foreign-exchange hedging and the share of recurring managed-service business are the right indicators to track. Comparing share prices alone misses the different business models behind the move.
