23 October 2026 | Company security disclosure carried forward from 22 October developments
Digital trust provider eMudhra disclosed security issues involving its global SSL/TLS certificate operations and plans to exit that global certificate business. These certificates are used to authenticate websites and encrypt connections. The disclosure has raised reasonable concerns among enterprise users, but it does not establish that every Indian digital-signature certificate or eSign transaction is compromised.
Two services with different trust chains
An SSL/TLS certificate helps a browser or application verify the identity of a server and negotiate encryption. An Indian digital signature certificate used for income-tax, GST, MCA and other filings generally operates under a separate legal and technical trust framework. A defect affecting one certificate product or issuance system should not be described as an automatic failure of unrelated products without supporting evidence.
What companies should check
IT administrators should inventory externally visible websites, the certificate authority and chain, issue and expiry dates, revocation status and any re-issuance notices. They should review logs for unusual authentication or certificate events and ensure replacement certificates are deployed before dependent services break. Organisations should also validate instructions directly with the service provider, not through unsolicited email links.
For users of digital signatures in tax, company law and other filings, the practical question is whether their own certificate serial number, issuing CA, token or eSign provider has been included in any official notice. If not, do not assume wholesale revocation. At the same time, routine operational checks and device security remain appropriate.
Financial and legal implications
Corporate statements should distinguish confirmed security findings, intended business exit, remediation, potential penalties and estimated costs. A security incident can affect customer contracts and future renewal revenue even without a proven data breach. Regulation, notification obligations and customer remedies depend on the jurisdiction and service involved.
