Crude is only the raw material. Economies consume gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG and petrochemicals. If refineries are damaged, constrained or badly located relative to demand, crude inventories can be adequate while usable fuels remain scarce. Product shortages show up in refining margins, known as crack spreads.
Diesel matters disproportionately because it powers trucking, agriculture, mining, backup generation and parts of industry. Jet fuel affects airlines and tourism. A refined-product shock can therefore transmit more directly into logistics and services than the same percentage move in crude.

Suppose crude costs $100 a barrel but diesel sells at a $65 refining margin before other costs. A logistics company cares about the diesel price, not the crude headline. Even if crude falls 5%, product prices can remain elevated if refinery bottlenecks keep the crack spread wide.

Energy and shipping shocks are constrained by physics before finance. Ships have finite speed, ports have finite berths, pipelines have capacity limits, refineries can process only certain crude slates and inventories cannot be moved instantly between regions. That mismatch is why freight, insurance and refined-product spreads can remain stressed even after crude prices retreat.
The most useful question is therefore not simply 'How much oil is lost?' It is how quickly can the system substitute? A disruption is more damaging when alternative routes are longer, storage is low, refinery capacity is concentrated and product inventories are thin. It is less damaging when spare logistics, strategic stocks and flexible refining are available.
It is the margin between the value of refined products and the cost of crude, before refinery operating and other costs.
It is deeply embedded in freight, agriculture, mining and industrial activity.
Export-oriented refiners can, although domestic policy and feedstock costs shape the net effect.
Aviation fuel can remain scarce because of refinery configuration and regional logistics.
The product actually consumed, currency exposure and timing—not crude alone.
