MSME Registration Under the 2026 Amendment Act: Free Voluntary National-Platform Readiness

By Ravi Sisodia · Reviewed by CA Divyanshu Sengar · Updated 5 October 2026

The enacted 2026 amendment provides for a national digital platform for free and voluntary MSME registration, with optional State platforms, but this new section awaits commencement. Udyam remains the current official registration system in operation.

Finin2min 2-Minute Summary

Current system: Udyam

The official Udyam portal states that registration is free, paperless and based on self-declaration and warns against private paid sites. Continue using the current official portal until a new operative notification/process says otherwise.

Do not create duplicate enterprise registrations merely to prepare for the 2026 amendment.

Future national-platform data map

Build a master with legal name, PAN, GSTIN, organisation type, activities/NIC, plant locations, turnover/investment inputs and current Udyam number. This makes future platform migration/reconciliation much easier.

Keep a change log for mergers, address changes and classification movement.

State benefit layer

The amended Act permits State digital platforms for State benefits. A business operating across states should distinguish the national registration identity from any additional state-benefit workflow once notified.

Avoid treating a State scheme registration as a replacement for Central registration unless the notified rules say so.

Migration readiness: current Udyam data contains an old plant address

A manufacturer has a valid Udyam registration but one unit moved two years ago and the internal GST/plant master was updated while Udyam was not. If a new national registration platform later pulls or validates government data, the inconsistency can create benefit or verification issues.

Use the transition period to compare Udyam, PAN, GSTIN, MCA/firm records and operational locations. Correct current records through the existing lawful process rather than waiting for a new platform to expose the mismatch.
