ITR E-Verification: The Filing Is Incomplete Until Verification
Scope: FY 2025–26 (1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026), filed for AY 2026–27
Finin2min Summary
- Deadline: E-verify (or send a signed ITR-V) within 30 days of filing - CBDT’s current rule for returns filed on or after 1 August 2022.
- Six accepted modes: Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank-account EVC, demat-account EVC, a pre-generated EVC, or a Digital Signature Certificate.
- Consequence of missing it: The return is treated as never filed - not merely late - which can forfeit loss carry-forward and refund claims unless relief is separately obtained.
- Core control: verify immediately after submission rather than assuming filing alone completes the return.
- Relief route if missed: CBDT Circular No. 7/2024 gave a one-time relaxation for returns invalidated by non-verification; beyond that, a Section 119(2)(b) condonation-of-delay application is the fallback where genuine hardship can be shown.

The Answer in One Table
| Question | Finin2min answer |
|---|---|
| Income period | FY 2025–26 (1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026) |
| Assessment year | AY 2026–27 |
| Verification window | 30 days from the date of e-filing |
| Accepted modes | Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank-account EVC, demat-account EVC, pre-generated EVC, or DSC |
| If the window is missed | Return is treated as not filed; relief needs Circular No. 7/2024 (past cases) or a Section 119(2)(b) condonation application |
| Fastest mode | Aadhaar OTP - typically under two minutes if the mobile number is linked to Aadhaar |
| Audit point | Verification failure can affect the effective filing date. |

The Two-Minute Answer
The correction route depends on the original form, due date, audit status, tax increase, refund effect and whether loss carry-forward is at stake. Rebuild a complete computation rather than adding one isolated line.
This page targets the frequent search intent—which return, which deadline, which schedules and which documents? It does not treat a broker, bank, app or platform label as the legal answer.

Step 1 — Choose a Verification Mode
Six modes are accepted, and none requires posting anything: Aadhaar OTP (fastest - the OTP is valid for 15 minutes with three attempts, and needs the mobile number linked to Aadhaar), net banking login through the bank’s own portal link to the e-filing site, bank-account EVC or demat-account EVC generated against a pre-validated account, a separately pre-generated EVC, or a Digital Signature Certificate (no longer mandatory even for tax-audit cases). An EVC is valid for 72 hours from generation, so complete the step in one sitting once it is issued.
If none of these are usable, the fallback is signing the physical ITR-V and posting it by ordinary or speed post to CPC Bengaluru - but this still has to reach CPC within the same 30-day window, so it is the slowest reliable option, not a substitute deadline.
Step 2 — Complete Verification Within the Deadline
CBDT tightened the window from 120 days to 30 days for returns filed on or after 1 August 2022. The countdown starts from the date of e-filing, not from the due date of the return - a return filed on 25 July must be verified by roughly 24 August regardless of the 31 July due date.
A return that is not verified in time is treated in law as if it was never filed, not merely filed late. That can forfeit the right to carry forward a business or capital loss and delay or void a refund claim. If the window has already passed, CBDT Circular No. 7/2024 gave a one-time relaxation for past returns invalidated purely for non-verification; for a fresh miss, the route is a Section 119(2)(b) condonation-of-delay application showing genuine hardship, decided within roughly six months of the application.
Step 3 — Apply the Filing Calendar
The normal filing timing is Complete within the portal-prescribed verification period. For AY 2026–27, ITR-1 and ITR-2 individual cases remain on the 31 July track; non-audit business or professional cases move to 31 August; ordinary audit cases remain 31 October and transfer-pricing cases 30 November. A belated return is generally available to 31 December 2026, subject to earlier assessment completion, but it does not preserve every loss or procedural right.
Income earned during FY 2025–26 remains governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961. The official transition FAQ confirms that the old forms and proceedings continue for AY 2026–27.
Step 4 — Build the Evidence File
- original acknowledgement
- corrected computation
- source statements
- tax challans
- audit or verification evidence and new acknowledgement
The file should allow another reviewer to reproduce the number from source statement to ITR schedule. Record the download date because platform reports can later change layout or aggregation.
Worked Indian Example
A taxpayer e-files ITR-3 on 20 July, reporting a ₹2.4 lakh business loss to carry forward, then forgets to e-verify while waiting for a bank statement. By the time they log back in on 28 August - 39 days later - the portal shows the return as invalid for want of verification. Because the 30-day window (roughly 19 August) has already passed, simply clicking "e-verify now" does not fix it: the return is legally treated as never filed, and the ₹2.4 lakh loss cannot be carried forward on an invalid return. The taxpayer’s only routes are checking whether Circular No. 7/2024 covers their case, or filing a Section 119(2)(b) condonation application explaining the delay - a materially worse position than if they had simply verified within the original window.
What Viral Posts Usually Miss
- The due date follows the return category and audit status, not the product’s marketing name.
- TDS is a tax credit, not the final computation.
- Net bank settlement is often not gross income, turnover or sale consideration.
- A belated return does not preserve every loss, option or procedural right.
- The same product can require ITR-2 for an investor and ITR-3 for a business.
Common Mistakes
- using rectification for the wrong form
- assuming belated filing preserves losses
- missing verification or audit acceptance

Finin2min Q&A
Which ITR should I use for ITR E-Verification?
The starting answer is Applies to every ITR form. The taxpayer’s complete income and exclusions can still change the final form.
What is the AY 2026–27 filing deadline?
The normal deadline is Complete within the portal-prescribed verification period. Audit, transfer-pricing, belated or correction facts can change the calendar.
Which income head applies?
The starting classification is Return verification and completion of filing. Contracts, ownership, records, intention and consistency can alter the result.
Does a small amount still need reporting?
A small amount does not create a general exemption and can make a simplified return ineligible.
Which documents should I preserve?
Preserve original acknowledgement, corrected computation, source statements, tax challans, audit or verification evidence and new acknowledgement. Keep downloaded source files, not only screenshots.
What is the main filing risk?
Key risks are using rectification for the wrong form; assuming belated filing preserves losses; missing verification or audit acceptance. Classify first, reconcile gross figures and then select the form.
