ITR-7 AY 2026-27 Online Filing: Trust, University and Institution Data-Population Map

By Ravi Sisodia · Reviewed by CA Divyanshu Sengar · Updated 5 October 2026

ITR-7 online filing for AY 2026-27 opened on 11 August 2026 and offline utility on 14 August. Trusts, universities and institutions should map registration, objects, receipts/application, investments and audit data into the correct schedules before validation.

Finin2min 2-Minute Summary

Entity and section mapping

Identify whether the filer is a charitable/religious trust, political party, research/news/other section 10 entity, university/college or another eligible person. Record the section that creates the filing obligation.

Do not reuse a trust checklist for a university merely because both file ITR-7.

Data population map

Link legal registration/approval, objects/activities, receipts, corpus, application of income, accumulation, investments, specified-person transactions, foreign contribution where relevant and audit-report figures to source ledgers.

Create control totals for opening/closing funds and bank/investment balances.

Approval and audit dependencies

Check validity of registration/approval and timely filing of required audit forms/other statements. A return can be numerically correct yet fail an exemption condition because a separate compliance was missed.

Keep return evidence with the governing approval and audit pack.

Trust data case: corpus receipt deposited in ordinary bank account

A trust can receive a donation stated to be corpus but deposit it into the same bank account used for ordinary receipts. The ITR-7 working should not rely on the bank account alone to classify the receipt. Preserve donor direction, receipt wording, ledger classification and investment/application treatment required by the exemption framework.

Similarly, application of income should be linked to books and supporting evidence rather than inferred from total expenditure. The return file should explain adjustments between accounting expenditure and tax-law application.

Institution-specific filing map

For a university or institution filing under section 139(4C) or 139(4D), build a schedule map specific to that legal category instead of copying a charitable-trust template. Identify grants, fees, research receipts, exemptions, application/use of funds and statutory approvals relevant to that institution.

The ITR-7 form is common to several entity types, but the legal conditions are not.
