India Adds 6.42 Million Telecom Subscribers in August; Total Connections Reach 1.36 Billion

TRAI's August 2026 subscriber data show India's total telephone subscriber base rose by 6.42 million during the month to 1.36070 billion. Broadband connections including machine-to-machine cellular links reached 1.10121 billion, while broadband excluding M2M was 1.01028 billion. What changed

India added 6.42 million telephone subscriptions in August to reach 1.36070 billion; broadband including M2M rose to 1.10121 billion.

Why it matters

The data show continued connectivity growth but also highlight the need to distinguish subscriptions, active users and machine connections when assessing market size.

Who is affected

Telecom operators, broadband providers, digital-finance businesses, investors, device/IoT providers, rural consumers and policymakers.

Action required

Use TRAI's connection definitions carefully; separate M2M and active subscribers before drawing user, revenue or inclusion conclusions.

TRAI's August 2026 subscriber data show India's total telephone subscriber base rose by 6.42 million during the month to 1.36070 billion. Broadband connections including machine-to-machine cellular links reached 1.10121 billion, while broadband excluding M2M was 1.01028 billion. Urban areas added 5.59 million telephone connections and rural areas added 0.83 million. These numbers measure subscriptions and connections, not unique people: one person can hold multiple SIMs, and M2M connections include devices rather than human users.

Key verified facts

  • Total telephone subscribers at end-August 2026: 1,360.70 million.
  • Net addition during August: 6.42 million, monthly growth of 0.47%.
  • Wireless subscriptions: 1,312.25 million; wireline: 48.45 million.
  • Urban telephone subscribers: 802.28 million, with 5.59 million net additions in August.
  • Rural telephone subscribers: 558.43 million, with 0.83 million net additions.
  • Broadband including M2M cellular connections: 1,101.21 million.
  • Broadband excluding M2M cellular connections: 1,010.28 million.
  • Active wireless subscribers on peak VLR were 1,207.59 million.
  • 15.83 million Mobile Number Portability requests were submitted during August.
  • TRAI data are based on information provided by telecom service providers.

Subscriber count is not population

A total of 1.36 billion telephone subscriptions does not mean 1.36 billion different Indians have a phone. Many users have two SIMs, companies hold large pools of connections and connected devices can also be counted.

This distinction matters when interpreting tele-density, market share and the addressable customer base.

Why M2M creates a second broadband number

Machine-to-machine connections allow devices such as trackers, meters, vehicles or industrial equipment to communicate over mobile networks. They can be broadband subscriptions even though there is no person browsing the internet.

That is why TRAI reports 1.10121 billion broadband subscriptions including M2M but 1.01028 billion excluding M2M. The difference is economically meaningful for IoT growth but should not be called additional internet users.

Urban growth was much faster in absolute terms

Urban areas added 5.59 million telephone subscriptions during August, compared with 0.83 million in rural areas. Urban connections represented 58.96% of total subscriptions at month-end.

That does not mean rural telecom has stopped growing. Rural additions were positive, but the monthly expansion was much smaller.

What active VLR tells us

TRAI reported 1.20759 billion active wireless subscribers on the date of peak Visitor Location Register activity. This is lower than the headline wireless subscriber base because not every registered connection is active at the same time.

For telecom analysts, the active base can be more useful than gross SIM count when estimating network usage and potential revenue.

Simple telecom example

Assume one person has a primary SIM, a second SIM for data and a smartwatch with a cellular connection. The network may record three subscriptions even though only one person owns them.

That is why subscriber totals should not be divided directly into population to estimate unique customers.

Why MNP requests matter

Mobile Number Portability lets users change operators while keeping their number. TRAI received 15.83 million porting requests in August. A high number indicates active competition and customers' willingness to switch for price, network quality or service.

A porting request does not necessarily become a completed switch, so the request count should not be treated as exact churn.

What the data may mean for telcos

More subscriptions can support revenue, but subscriber growth alone does not guarantee better profitability. Telecom companies also need healthy average revenue per user, controlled customer-acquisition cost and disciplined capital expenditure.

An operator can add millions of low-paying SIMs while still facing margin pressure. Conversely, a stable subscriber base can produce stronger cash flow if tariffs and data usage rise.

Wireline is small but growing

Wireline subscriptions were 48.45 million and added about 0.44 million during August. Fixed broadband and enterprise connectivity can carry higher-value data traffic even though the absolute subscriber base is much smaller than mobile.

Fibre and fixed-wireless competition can therefore matter disproportionately to home and business broadband economics.

Rural digital-finance relevance

Connectivity affects UPI, digital lending, insurance access, e-commerce and government benefit delivery. Rural subscription growth therefore has implications beyond telecom revenue.

But a SIM card does not prove reliable broadband quality. Coverage, speed, affordability and digital literacy still determine whether connectivity translates into actual financial inclusion.

What not to misunderstand

Do not call 1.36 billion subscriptions 1.36 billion unique users. Do not combine M2M device connections with human internet users without explanation. Do not treat MNP requests as completed customer losses.

Also do not infer operator-specific winners from the aggregate release unless TRAI's provider-level table is separately analysed.

What to watch next

Future monthly releases should be compared on active subscribers, broadband growth, M2M expansion, rural additions, wireline growth and operator market share. Revenue data and tariff changes need separate company analysis.

Finin2min can also track whether subscriber growth continues after any major tariff revision because connection growth and monetisation can move in opposite directions.

Finin2min bottom line

India's telecom base is still expanding, but the most useful reading is not the 1.36 billion headline alone. The split between active users, M2M devices, urban/rural growth and broadband connections gives a clearer picture of the digital economy.
