Current position
Control and evidence map
| # | Control / evidence requirement | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Freeze inventory at the closure date and identify invoices on which ITC was availed. | |
| 2 | Calculate section 18(4)/Rule 44 liability for stock and capital goods. | |
| 3 | Resolve unmatched e-invoices/e-way bills, advances and credit notes. | |
| 4 | File the cancellation application with consistent closure facts and preserve the order. | |
| 5 | Prepare GSTR-10 from the same closure workbook; retain old-period records for future notices. | |
Worked example
A trading business closes with Rs. 9 lakh of inventory and two laptops on which ITC had been claimed. It cannot simply cancel the GSTIN and write the assets off. The closure file should compute the prescribed stock/capital-goods amount, settle tax, and ensure the same figures flow into GSTR-10 and the books.
Common mistakes
- Treating cancellation approval as a waiver of old tax exposure.
- Ignoring WIP/finished-goods inputs while computing reversal.
- Using a stock figure in GSTR-10 that does not match the general ledger.
- Discarding records immediately after cancellation.
Frequently asked questions
Does cancellation end past-period liability?

What happens to ITC on closing stock?
Section 18(4) and Rule 44 require a prescribed payment/reversal computation.
Is GSTR-10 required after cancellation?
It is the statutory final-return framework for applicable cancelled registrations.
What date should stock be measured on?
Use the legally relevant effective cancellation/closure position and reconcile it to the order and books.
