Gold Loans: LTV, Valuation and Auction Risk

A practical guide to RBI’s gold-loan framework covering tiered LTV, valuation, assaying, documents, repayment, auction and surplus refund.

A gold loan may be approved quickly because the collateral is easy to value. The borrower still needs to understand LTV, interest accumulation, auction triggers and the return of pledged jewellery.

What Matters Now

RBI’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025 create a common framework for regulated lenders. For consumption loans, maximum LTV is tiered by total loan amount per borrower: up to ₹2.5 lakh, above ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and above ₹5 lakh.

Valuation uses the actual purity and intrinsic metal value. Stones and other non-metal elements are excluded. The lender should explain deductions and provide a certificate describing the collateral and valuation.

LTV must be maintained through the loan tenor. For bullet loans, total amount repayable at maturity is considered. Interest accumulation can therefore create risk even when the initial advance looked conservative.

How It Works

StageWhat happensControl
AssayThe lender weighs and tests purity with the borrower present.Check net weight and deductions.
ValueReference price and actual purity determine collateral value.Do not count stones or workmanship.
LTVLoan plus relevant outstanding amount is compared with value.Monitor the ratio through the tenor.
AuctionNotice, reserve-price and surplus rules apply.Keep contact details updated and respond early.

Decision Framework

Start with the exact decision being made. A payment choice, credit facility, investment, policy, remittance or compliance step should not be judged only by convenience or headline return. For Gold Loans: LTV, Valuation and Auction Risk, the four useful lenses are up to ₹2.5 lakh: Maximum 85% LTV; ₹2.5–5 lakh: Maximum 80% LTV; above ₹5 lakh: Maximum 75% LTV; auction surplus: Refund safeguards.

Next, identify the downside before considering the expected benefit. Ask how much money can be lost or delayed, which obligation becomes fixed, who controls the data or asset, what happens when the provider fails, and which official complaint or appeal route remains available. This converts a marketing claim into a testable decision.

Finally, define the review trigger. A rule change, missed payment, benefit revision, sharp market move, data incident, unresolved reconciliation or change in personal cash flow should reopen the decision. Evidence should be collected when the transaction occurs, not reconstructed after a dispute.

  • Assay: Check net weight and deductions.
  • Value: Do not count stones or workmanship.
  • LTV: Monitor the ratio through the tenor.
  • Auction: Keep contact details updated and respond early.

Who Bears the Risk

ParticipantPrimary responsibilityFailure to avoid
User or customerRead the terms, authorise deliberately, preserve records and act within personal cash-flow or risk limits.Stones included in collateral value.
Provider or intermediaryMake accurate disclosures, operate the agreed process, protect data or assets and maintain a usable grievance route.Blank or vague collateral description.
Adviser or finance teamApply the current rule to the actual facts, separate assumptions from evidence and explain material downside clearly.Only principal shown for a bullet loan.

Regulation can allocate duties, but it cannot remove commercial or market risk. The safest operating approach is to know which participant owns each step and to escalate an exception before money, data or legal rights become difficult to recover.

Practical Example

A borrower pledges jewellery valued for metal content at ₹4 lakh and takes a consumption loan within the applicable tier. If interest accumulates under a bullet structure and gold prices fall, the ongoing LTV can tighten. The borrower should track the maturity amount, not only the principal received.

Are stones valued as gold collateral?
