No-Cost EMI and BNPL: Hidden Costs

Reviewed by CA Nikhil Gupta · Last reviewed 25 June 2026

Test no-cost EMI and BNPL offers for lost discounts, processing fees, taxes, credit reporting, late charges and pressure on future cash flow.

Zero advertised interest does not mean zero economic cost. The merchant discount may be removed, a fee may apply and the purchase still becomes debt.

Quick View

Primary decision

Total-cost and cash-price comparison

First action

Ask for the cash price first.

Core evidence

Cash and financed-price screenshots.

Main risk

Calling an offer free without comparing the cash discount.

What Matters

In a no-cost EMI structure, the merchant or provider may subsidise the interest or adjust the upfront discount. The buyer should compare the cash price with the total amount paid, processing cost and taxes.

BNPL and deferred-payment products offered through regulated entities are credit and are subject to credit-information reporting under RBI’s digital-lending framework. Small-ticket and short-tenor labels do not remove the repayment obligation.

Several separate plans can stack on the same salary date. Affordability should therefore be measured as total fixed obligations after rent, food, insurance and existing loans—not as the instalment for one purchase.

Decision Table

SituationMeaningControl
Cash pricePrice after available non-finance discount.Use as the comparison base.
EMI totalAll instalments plus fee and tax.Do not compare only monthly amount.
Credit reportingFacility may appear in bureau data.Track every account.
Late paymentCan trigger charge and recovery.Record the due date and mandate.

Action Checklist

  1. Ask for the cash price first.
  2. Download the KFS or card terms.
  3. Add processing fees and taxes.
  4. List all existing instalments.
  5. Check cancellation and refund treatment.
  6. Keep enough bank balance before auto-debit.

Practical Example

A phone costs ₹48,000 in cash after a ₹4,000 discount, or ₹52,000 under a no-cost EMI with a ₹499 fee. The monthly instalment looks manageable, but the economic cost is ₹4,499 above the discounted cash price before any late payment.

Evidence to Keep

  • Cash and financed-price screenshots.
  • KFS, card terms or loan agreement.
  • Processing-fee and tax invoice.
  • Repayment schedule.
  • Cancellation and refund record.
  • Credit report after closure.

Warning Signs

  • Calling an offer free without comparing the cash discount.
  • Using multiple apps with different due dates.
  • Assuming cancellation automatically closes the loan.
  • Paying an instalment to a collection agent’s account.
  • Funding recurring essentials through BNPL every month.

How to Decide

Use deferred payment for a planned durable purchase only when the total cost is transparent and future income comfortably covers it. If the purchase would not be made at the cash price, financing should not make it appear affordable.

After a refund, verify both the merchant credit and loan closure. A reversed order can still leave an active credit account or fee unless the lender confirms adjustment.

The decision should be recorded in writing when it changes a loan, claim, mandate, account status or family right. Verbal assurances are useful only when the institution later confirms them through the official channel.

Costs, limits, product terms and regulatory processes can change. Use the latest agreement, policy schedule, KFS, account statement or regulator instruction for the specific transaction rather than copying an old threshold from another case.

Control Test

The practical test is whether the reader can explain the decision using four separate records: the contractual position, the money movement, the institution’s communication and the final status. For this topic, the key stages are cash price, emi total, credit reporting, late payment. Each stage should have an owner, a date and a document.

Start with Ask for the cash price first. Then preserve Cash and financed-price screenshots. A later complaint is much stronger when it shows what was known, what was requested, what the institution did and which amount or right remains disputed.

Do not let urgency erase the audit trail. One of the clearest warning signs is Calling an offer free without comparing the cash discount. Any payment, consent, waiver, mandate or family instruction made under pressure should be paused until the receiving entity and legal effect are independently confirmed.

Measure affordability after essential household expenses, existing EMIs, insurance premiums and a realistic income shock. The sanctioned amount is not the same as usable cash when fees or deductions apply, and a reduced EMI can simply extend the period for which interest is paid.

A lender’s verbal explanation should be converted into a KFS, revised repayment schedule, account statement or written settlement. Compare principal, ordinary interest, charges, taxes, total repayment and credit-report treatment separately; combining them into one figure hides the source of the cost.
