Contribution for your age at every pension level

How APY works

Atal Pension Yojana is a PFRDA-run pension scheme for unorganised-sector workers. You choose a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000 or ₹5,000 from age 60. The monthly contribution is fixed by your joining age and chosen pension and does not change. The younger you join, the lower the contribution: for a ₹5,000 pension it is ₹210 at age 18 and ₹1,454 at age 40.

On the subscriber’s death the spouse continues to receive the same pension; after both, the nominee receives the accumulated pension wealth (₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension up to ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000).

Worked example

Joining at 25 for a ₹5,000 pension: contribution ₹376 a month for 35 years = ₹1,57,920 paid in. The scheme then pays ₹5,000 a month for life and returns ₹8.5 lakh to the nominee. If you draw pension for 22 years, the implied return on your contributions is about 7.9% a year. In today’s money, ₹5,000 at 60 with 6% inflation is worth about ₹651.

Methodology, assumptions and sources

Scope: Official APY contribution for a joining age and pension level, with totals, nominee corpus and an implied-return estimate.

Calculation logic

  1. Monthly contribution = value from the PFRDA chart for (age, pension).
  2. Years paying = 60 − joining age; total paid = contribution × 12 × years.
  3. Implied return = monthly rate that equates contributions with the pension for the years you expect to draw it plus the nominee corpus at the end.
  4. Late fee per month by contribution band.
